Hydrilla and Our Festival

The Ithaca community is currently working to eradicate Hydrilla from our waters. Hydrilla is potentially catastrophic, both ecologically and economically, for the entire region.

Hydrilla is highly invasive aquatic plant, Hydrilla verticillata, known commonly as "hydrilla" or "water thyme". Fragments of the plant, which are easily caught and transported by boats and boat trailers, can sprout roots and establish new populations. Fragments also float and are capable of dispersing via wind and water currents.

The Finger lakes International Dragon Boat Festival is concerned about the health of our lake, we are working with the Ithaca community to take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of hydrilla on Cayuga Lake.

More details about hydrilla and its potential harm.

All dragon boats, outrigger canoes, and standup paddleboards will be cleaned and inspected before and after entering the lake.
